1. You will need: forks, tooth picks and a glass.
2. Slide the forks together so they are stuck together.
3. Put a tooth pick in the middle and find the balance point.
The science concept at play is "center of mass," the point where the entire weight of the system (forks and toothpick) is concentrated. By carefully positioning the toothpick, you can shift the center of mass to balance directly over the edge of the glass.
These photos are from my own kitchen. It's doable! Give it a try.
4. You can light the inside end of the tooth pick on fire: it will burn to the edge of the glass, and still stay balanced!
Have your kids see first hand just how cool science is!
